Bhangra Musical!

From the production team behind the Tony Award-winning Hadestown, the new show A Beat of Our Own brings the world of competitive bhangra dance to the world of musical theatre! The vibrant production’s creative team includes Olivier Award nominee Stafford Arima (Ragtime) directing and internationally acclaimed choreographer Rujuta Vaidya (Bhangin’ It; Jai Ho). There’s an infectious original score by composer-lyricist Sam Willmott, with book co-written by Rehana Lew Mirza and Mike Lew. 

What Is The Story?

A Beat of our Own follows college dancers Mary and Preeti, fresh off a big victory at the Michigan State Championships. However, their ticket to Nationals is quickly compromised when the two clash over Mary’s vision to bring in various different Indian dance styles to the routine. Refusing to compromise, Mary splits from the team to build her own rival squad from scratch, but her new lineup consists entirely of clueless misfits who have never even danced before, other than her roommate Sunita. But with the unexpected guidance of a washed-up Bollywood legend, can Mary’s new crew unseat Preeti’s talented bhangra champions?
