Off-Broadway Debuts
Indian Princesses is a new play by Eliana Theologides Rodriguez, directed by Miranda Cornell. Marking an Off-Broadway debut for both, the work brings a reflection on how a well-intentioned tradition can carry un-examined harm, drawn from Rodriguez' personal experiences in the still-running Indian Guides program. Culturally relevant, the play is sure to become a conversation starter, using the language of theater to interrogate a ritual that may be familiar to many. Don't miss it!
What Is It About?
Set during the "Indian Princesses" summer father-daughter bonding program, the play follows five girls of color participating alongside their white fathers in activities which are framed as community-building, but in reality are highly rooted in cultural appropriation. As the girls begin to question the meanings behind what they are asked to celebrate, their fathers struggle to address them. Indian Princesses satirically explores how young people begin to articulate truths that the adults around them have long avoided.
