Mona Pirnot premieres yet another groundbreaking new play
Obie Award winner Mona Pirnot (I Love You So Much I Could Die) returns to the Atlantic Theater Company with her latest premiere, I Became We. Another fine example of Pirnot’s creatively unique work, the play puts drama to music in the form of a monologue from one woman’s perspective, told by a 16-piece choir. Directed by fellow Obie winner Sarah Benson, the production’s original songs are co-written by Jack D. Coen and Pirnot, with Mimi Lien on set design, Louisa Thompson on costumes and Tuce Yasak designing lighting.
A woman in her thirties is debating one of the biggest decisions one can make in life. That complex internal dialogue and her evolving emotions forms the first-person monologue which is the centerpiece of I Became We, performed entirely in song by the 16-member choir. With everyday modern parlance transformed into the classical realm of choral music, an intimate memoir becomes something truly beautiful.
