Why see Describe the Night?
A brand-new drama by "Baghdad Zoo" playwright
Playwright Rajiv Joseph returns with a world premiere drama that spans 80 years in Russia and tells stories of seven men and women who are connected by history, myth and conspiracy theories. Best-known for his 2010 triumph Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, starring the late Robin Williams, this new drama takes a vastly more serious approach by tackling Russian conspiracy and spanning over eight decades. We move through the early days of Communism, to the Cold War and the rise of the new post-2001 Russian superstate.
What is it about?
Starting in 1920, three years after the Revolution, Russian writer Isaac Babel is now part of the Red Cavalry as they rove through the rural backwaters of the new Soviet Union. Fast forward 70 years, we meet a mysterious KGB agent as he spies on a woman in Dresden - he did not expect to fall in love with her. How very James Bond. And in 2010 we are faced with the disaster of an aeroplane crash in Smolensk; the jet was carrying most of the Polish government, and now a global conflict looms in the aftermath.
