April Matthis stars in this inspiring tale of the underdog
April Matthis and Tony-winning director Pam McKinnon join forces to bring the extraordinary story of the first woman to play professional baseball in the Negro League during the struggles of the Civil Rights Movement. The brand new work enjoys an Off-Broadway debut at NYC's Laura Pels Theatre as part of the Roundabout Theatre Company's 2018/19 season. son.
Matthis portrays the titular Toni Stone, a tom boy whose gender and race are both at odds with her love of baseball. Fighting her own battle with racial oppression, the talented sportswoman grows up to defy conventions and become a symbol of civil rights when she replaces Henry Aaron when he leaves for the major leagues.
