Henry IV Part I

Henry IV Part I at BAM Harvey Lichtenstein Theater

Why see Henry IV Part I?

nothing can seem foul to those that win.

The highly acclaimed Henry IV plays reach BAM as part of the Kings and Country Cycle, first performed at the esteemed Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-Upon-Avon. As with the other plays in this tetralogy, director Gregory Doran continues to explore Shakespeare's "history" with this story in two parts. Reprising their roles are Antony Sher as Sir John Falstaff, Jasper Britton as King Henry and Alex Hassell as wayward Prince Hal.

Henry IV 1367 - 1413

With his crown under threat from both foreign and domestic enemies, Henry IV is getting ready to defend his right to the throne. As preparations for war draw closer, Henry despairs that his son, Prince Hal (the Prince of Wales and future heir to the throne) is spending his time carousing and merrymaking in London's bawdy brothels with his best friend, the libertine Sir John Falstaff, and is surely not ready to confront his responsibility to him family and the throne. But is Hal's irresponsible behavior in the taverns the sign of an unruly, spoiled Prince - or is it all an act to dispense with when he becomes king?

SHAKESPEARE'S KING CYCLE

The four plays that make up Shakespeare's War of The Roses collection of works remains today a crucial part of the Bard's great works, lending greater depth to English royal history, and providing inspiration to modern works such as George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones anthology. With a host of great British stars set to reprise their roles this side of the Atlantic, BAM will be the go-to place for Shakespeare lovers in 2016.
