Why see Escaped Alone?

The New York premiere of Caryl Churchill's drama

First premiering at London's Royal Court Theatre to rave reviews, this transfer of Caryl Churchill's inventive and apocalyptic play makes its New York debut this February. A timely examination of corruption, the collapse of society and how the powerful rule, Churchill's garden-set apocalyptic drama sees four elderly women take tea in a sunshine-filled garden - but their conversations are far from being about late buses and measley state pensions. At first bemoaning the state of today's Britain, things take a darker turn when conversation takes on a decidedly apocalyptic edge.

Tackling such foibles of modernity such as social media and the trend for interne-famous kittens, the conversations between the four women belie their own personal histories (one a husband-killer, another with a cat phobia); however, the contribution from the newest member of the group becomes aggressively dark and gloomy, with pollution and war soon dominating the state of things. As the sky darkens overhead, the witty banter and laughter soon take on a jarring contrast - is the apocalypse in fact, coming? And why are there FOUR women in the garden...cue the horses.
