Antigone in Ferguson

Antigone in Ferguson at Harlem Stage

Why see Antigone in Ferguson?

Starring Samira Wiley and Paul Giamatti

Fusing together Greek tragedy and the 2014 death of Michael Brown, Antigone in Ferguson is a powerful commentary on relations between the police and communities of color. The show features a cast stage and screen stars reading excerpts from Sophocles' tale, backed by a full gospel choir. Among those starring in this New York production are Samira Wiley (The Handmaid's Tale), Paul Giamatti (Billions), Tamara Tunie (Better Call Saul) and David Strathairn (McMafia). Each performance will be followed by a discussion about the social justice and racial issues raised by the work.

What is Antigone About?

The story of Antigone follows the daughter of Oedipus as she puts her life on the line by defying King Creon. The king has proclaimed that the body of her brother Polyneices, who died fighting in a civil war, should not be granted a proper burial, but instead left out on battlefield as a warning for others.
