A Man of Good Hope

A Man of Good Hope at BAM Gilman Opera House

Why see A Man of Good Hope?

The New York premiere

This musical drama by South African writer Jonny Steinberg is a touching story about a refugee, that has won over critics and audiences all over the country. Set in the hard townships of South Africa, we follow the struggles of young Somalian refugee Assad as he finds himself pin-balled across the African continent by violent uprisings. With a concept by the Olivier Award-winning Cape Town-based Isango Ensemble, we are given a unique and unflinching insight into the plight of the disenfranchised, something that remains all too much a sad reality in today's world.

A tribute to human endurance, the action moves between refugee camps to war-torn streets, and into the poverty-riddled Cape Town townships, with haunting choral music provided by Isango. Helmed by Mark Dornford-May, this production has been performed worldwide since premiering last fall at London's famous Royal Opera House. An original co-production with The Young Vic Theatre company, the musical play received universal accolades for its uncompromising drama and ultimate message of hope.
