It's teenage warfare! Labelled as the African Mean Girls', the witty comedic work of Tony Award-nominated writer Jocelyn Bioh explores the social ranks amongst young girls at an exclusive Ghanaian boarding school. The play dives into the inner worlds of teenage girls and how they interact and socialise with each other during the highs and lows of growing up.
Following its critically acclaimed, sold-out Off-Broadway run, the play now makes its highly anticipated Broadway debut, with performances beginning September 8 at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. Directed by Tony Award-nominated Whitney White, this new staging brings Bioh back to the company after the success of Jaja's African Hair Braiding.
Popular girl Paulina knows a thing or two about winning - she is the current queen bee of Aburi Girls Boarding School, after all - and now she has her eyes set on the prize of becoming Miss Ghana 1986. She'll do anything to secure her crown, but feels threatened by new girl Ericka, who also possesses the beauty and grace required to win the title. What happens next highlights the struggles that teenage girls have to deal with across the world, as the competition turns deeply more personal.
The play originally opened to widespread acclaim and went on to receive the 2018 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play and the Outer Critics Circle John Gassner Award for New American Playwright.
