Awake and Sing

Awake and Sing at Samuel J. Friedman Theatre

Why see Awake and Sing?

Here Without A Dollar, You Don’t Look the world in the eye

More than 90 years after its premiere, Clifford Odets' Tony Award-winning Awake and Sing! returns to Broadway in a major new revival directed by Tyne Rafaeli. First staged at New York's Belasco Theatre in 1935, Awake and Sing! arrived at the height of the Great Depression. Odets shone a light on the struggles faced by millions of Americans while remaining rooted in the Jewish immigrant experience of 1930s New York. Don't miss one of the country's defining plays as it comes to New York's Samuel J. Friedman Theatre.

What's The Story?

Cramped in a Bronx apartment during one of the toughest periods in American history, with jobs scarce and money stretched to breaking point, for the Berger family, every decision is a matter of survival. Patriarch Jacob dreams of a fairer future inspired by socialist ideals, while his daughter Bessie believes financial security must come before personal happiness, even if that means controlling the lives of those around her. Caught in the middle is Bessie's son Ralph, a young man desperate to build a life of his own but weighed down by family expectations, economic hardship and the uncertain future facing his generation.

This new Broadway production brings together an acclaimed cast led by Tony Award winner Danny Burstein as Jacob, alongside Tony Award nominee Micaela Diamond, Tony and Emmy Award nominee Jessica Hecht, Tony Award nominee Jeremy Shamos and Will Pullen.
