Why see Falsettos?

Revival Cast Celebrates 10 Years

To celebrate ten years since Falsettos was lovingly revived on Broadway to great success, the original revival cast regroups to perform an extremely limited run of extra special concert performances. The hotly anticipated Carnegie Hall shows will see cast members Christian Borle, Stephanie J. Block, Tracie Thoms, Andrew Rannells, Betsy Wolfe and Brandon Uranowitz pay tribute to the music and book that made William Finn and James Lapine's brilliant work such an enduring landmark of gay theatre. Most of the musicians from the original revival band will also feature in the band for these performances, and direction comes from Ellenore Scott, who was assistant choreographer on the original revival.

When the original production opened in 1992, Falsettos made for a thoroughly subversive Broadway show, exploring the all-too-recent AIDS crisis in the form of a wholesome song and dance musical. It was nominated for seven Tonys, taking home two awards for Best Book of a Musical and Best Score, before the 2016 revival brought it to a whole new audience and garnered critical adoration of its own. Thirteen award nominations for the revival, including multiple from the Tony and Drama Desk Awards, cemented its standing as one of the most important works of theatre in its generation.

What Is Falsettos About?

In 1979 New York City, married-with-child Marvin falls for another man. He leaves his wife Trina to set up home with his new lover, and attempts to form a stable family unit for his son Jason. This plan doesn't go so well, with Mavin trying to slot his boyfriend Whizzer into Trina's former role of homemaker and Jason suffering anxiety about having two dads. Things then get even more complicated when Marvin's psychiatrist Mendel, who has been charged with shoring up this delicate situation, falls for Trina.
