Marmo's One Man Show About Comedian Lenny Bruce and Freedom of Speech
Lenny Bruce pushed almost every boundary possible in the '50s and '60s. He was the spirit of a rebellion whose idealistic, open and critical comedy took on everything from politics and religion to sex and ribald profanity. But, the acclaimed American stand-up comic and social critic later became known for his conviction for obscenity for a word he used during a late night performance at the Jazz Workshop in San Francisco, and again at subsequent shows. He died two years after his conviction and, in 2003, received a posthumous pardon - the first in New York State history.
Bruce lay the foundations for future outspoken counterculture comedians and his obscenity trial became a landmark for freedom of speech.
Ronnie Marmo's one-man show, I'm Not a Comedian... I'm Lenny Bruce, is partially a political play that examines Bruce's life and his observations on society. Its original six-week run was extended following sellout performances and ran for a further 14 months in Los Angeles. As free speech, race, and religion are falling under the spotlight again, Bruce's style of comedy is all the more pertinent and growing in popularity. Don't miss your chance to see what he was all about.
