Tribes

Tribes at Barrow Street Theater

Why see Tribes?

Billy was born deaf, into a hearing family, and raised inside the fiercely idiosyncratic and unrepentantly politically incorrect cocoon of his parent's house. He has adapted brilliantly to his family's unconventional ways, but they've never bothered to return the favor. It's not until he meets Sylvia, a young woman on the brink of deafness, that he finally understands what it means to be understood. Yes, Billy's family can hear, but will they ever listen?

Written by playwright Nina Raine, Tribes combines drama and comedy beautifully to create a highly memorably account of family relationships, and the languages of love and friendship.

The production premiered in 2012 at London's Royal Court Theatre to rave reviews and was nominated for an Olivier Award during it's hugely successful run on the West End. It has since won several high-profile awards including the 2012 New York Theatre Critics Circle Award, the 2012 Off-Broadway Alliance Award for Best Play and 2012 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play.
