Groundhog Day

Why see Groundhog Day?

Nominated for seven 2017 tony awards

Having opened in London's West End to a tidal wave of critical praise and box office receipts, the latest show from the creative duo behind Matilda: The Musical hits Broadway. Written by Olivier Award-winning songwriter Tim Minchin and directed by Matthew Warchus, Groundhog Dog is a musical stage adaptation of Ivan Reitman's classic 1993 comedy which starred Bill Murray. The story follows the struggles of misanthropic reporter Phil Connors (three time Tony nominee Andy Karl) when he becomes stuck in a time loop, forced to live the same day over and over again.

From London to New York

With a book by the movie's original scribe Danny Rubin, Groundhog Day is a true theatrical masterstroke, using the repetitious nature of the plot to craft a bold and innovatively staged show with a heart of gold. On its London debut, it bowled critics over, with The Stage calling it "an absolute triumph", while The Times branded it "so much fun that it should be illegal ". The show also won two Olivier Awards: Best New Musical and Best Actor for Andy Karl.

WHAT IS GROUNDHOG DAY ABOUT?

Every year, the small town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania comes to a standstill to see whether their local groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, will emerge from his burrow and herald the end of winter. For pessimistic TV weather man Phil Connors, this charming small town ritual seems like a colossal waste of time, but nevertheless he's packed off to cover the event by his bosses, with long-suffering producer Rita and cameraman Larry in tow.

Things go from bad to worse for Phil when he finds himself stuck in a bizarre time loop, waking up every morning in Punxsutawney to relive the same day over and over again. As Phil begins to understand the rhythms of this existential nightmare, he realises that something deep within himself may have to change before his life is allowed to go back to normal...
