Why see As You Like It?
The Bushwick Shakespeare Repertory Presents As You Like It
Shakespeare's As You Like It has a familiar comedic formula: heroes banished to the wilderness, girls in pants, witty fools, characters breaking into song, and multiple couplings, but its clever banter and merry tone is unique within the canon. In BSR's upcoming adaptation, the return to the simple life in the Forest of Arden is set in the nostalgic Americana of the 1930s, specifically as popularized by the cover artists of the Saturday Evening Post of that time, Norman Rockwell and J.C. Leyendecker, among others. Incorporated into this pastoral frolic is music from NYC folk trio The Roches, as well as original collaborative music from the cast.
This is the second full-length production from the Bushwick Shakespeare Repertory, whose all-female Romeo & Juliet and ongoing performance salon, Merely Players, have been well-received in Brooklyn and Manhattan alike. In keeping with Bushwick Shakes' commitment to providing challenging casting opportunities, the roles of Rosalind and Celia will be played in repertory by Tiffany Baker and Julia Crockett, and the traditionally male roles of Jaques and Touchstone will be played by Michelle Foytek and Jordan Boughrum.
