Your Guide To Off-Broadway

Welcome to Off-Broadway, where, beyond the hustle and bustle of Times Square, there's everything from cult hits and experimental stagecraft to superstars in the making. Maybe you've seen one too many musicals, or are searching for the next niche topic to obsess over, whatever you're looking for, Off-Broadway is home to the underdogs of the theater world. They may play on stages that aren't as big, but they certainly know how to make a giant impact.
A Quick Definition
So many Broadway terms, what could they possibly mean? Well, the term relates to theatre size. Generally:
Off-Broadway theatres have between 100 and 499 seats, whilst Broadway theatres have 500 or more. Off-Off-Broadway venues are even smaller, usually seating fewer than 100 people.
Fun fact: Off-Broadway doesn't necessarily mean theatres located outside Broadway, as the name might suggest. In fact, some of the venues are right in the heart of Manhattan's Theatre District.
How Did Off-Broadway Begin?
In the 1950s, producers were searching for alternatives to Broadway's increasing commercialism - think of it as a sort of artistic rebellion. Smaller venues offered a chance to stage more unusual plays, revive forgotten classics and give new writers a platform. This more fluid and free spirit of Off-Broadway, which still exists today, can be seen in the buildings themselves, many of which were originally built for a different existence such as being churches or disco clubs whilst most Broadway venues are built specifically to stage Broadway shows.
One of the key venues was Circle in the Square in Greenwich Village. Its 1952 revival of Tennessee Williams' Summer and Smoke, directed by Jose Quintero, became a major success and helped put Off-Broadway on the map.
Soon, other theaters were following suit, giving audiences the chance to see work that might never have made it to a Broadway stage. The movement also helped launch the careers of some of America's most important playwrights, including Edward Albee, Sam Shepard and Lanford Wilson.
What Kind Of Shows Can You See?
Off-Broadway is the definition of variety. Not only is it where writers and creatives go to bring new ideas that might not fit the traditional Broadway mould, but it's not all avant-garde theatre either! Off-Broadway has also been home to plenty of comedy, musicals, family shows and long-running audience favourites, such as Stomp, the hugely popular percussion show that began in the UK before finding a long-running home at the Orpheum Theatre.
Some of Broadway's biggest hits began there too like Hamilton, Rent, Dear Evan Hansen and In the Heights. You truly never know when you might stumble across the next big thing!
Shows including Altar Boyz, Perfect Crime, Forbidden Broadway, Nunsense, Naked Boys Singing, Bat Boy: The Musical and more have all enjoyed long-running Off-Broadway engagements without transferring, even though they are more than worthy of the big stage.
It Saves A Penny Or Two
Or a lot! The price difference for Off-Broadway may be relative, but it's undeniable. Premium quality, often at half the price or even less.
Current listings as of 2026 (subject to change) include Little Shop of Horrors from around $55 and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee from around $60, while many Broadway favourites start well above $100. If you're watching your budget, Off-Broadway is the way to go.
