Broadway’s Smash Bids Farewell

Final Performance Set for June 22
Smash - the splashy new Broadway musical about the chaotic process of making a Broadway musical - is taking its final bow much sooner than expected. After just a few months on the Great White Way, the show will close at the Imperial Theatre on June 22.

What's The Story?
The musical - like its TV predecessor - follows the passionate, messy, often hilarious journey of a group of artists trying to bring a musical about Marilyn Monroe to Broadway. Featuring music by the powerhouse duo Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (of Hairspray fame), the show includes fan-favorite numbers from the TV series along with brand-new songs written just for the stage. The book was crafted by Rick Elice (Jersey Boys) and Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone).

Based on the cult-favorite NBC series of the same name, Smash officially opened on April 10 after 32 previews. By the time it wraps up, it will have played 84 regular performances - not a long run by Broadway standards, but certainly a memorable one.
The original TV show only lasted two seasons, but it left behind a legacy of die-hard fans. Unfortunately, Smash struggled to gain traction amid a packed Broadway season. Despite a glowing review from The New York Times and two Tony nominations, the show never quite found its audience and faced consistently soft box office numbers.
And if you can't make it to the Imperial before June 22? Don't worry. The original Broadway cast recording was just released by Concord Theatricals Recordings and is available to stream now. CDs and vinyl editions are on the way this summer, and the production value is sky-highrecorded, mixed, and mastered by a dream team of Grammy winners.
