Whoopi Goldberg To Star In Annie Revival On Broadway

Author KevinKevin, August 27th, 2024

Leapin lizards! This is going to be the best Christmas yet!

Legendary entertainer Whoopi Goldberg is set to dazzle Broadway audiences this holiday season as she steps into the shoes of Miss Hannigan, in a fresh revival of Annie. The beloved star will step into the spotlight at the Theatre at Madison Square Garden, with the production running from December 4th to January 5th. Goldberg's first appearance as the villainous orphanage matron will be on December 11th.

All About The New Annie!

Before arriving in New York, this production will have an exclusive run at the Chicago Theatre from November 12th to December 1st, though Goldberg won't be part of that pre-New York engagement.

This sparkling new staging of Annie is led by director Jenn Thompson, with choreography by Patricia Wilcox. The creative team also includes Wilson Chin on sets, Alejo Vietti on costumes, Philip Rosenberg on lighting, Ken Travis on sound, Ashley Rae Callahan on hair and wigs, and Dan DeLange handling orchestrations. The production is an Equity staging of the recent non-Equity national tour, bringing the classic musical back to the Big Apple with a fresh twist.

What Is The Story Of Annie?

Filled with unforgettable songs from your childhood like "Tomorrow" and "It's the Hard-Knock Life,", Annie follows the adventures of a merry young orphan called Annie during The Great Depression. Trapped in a brutal orphanage run by the vicious Miss Hannigan, Annie's life takes a surprising turn when she's chosen to spend Christmas with the affluent Oliver Warbucks. Despite her urge to find her real parents, Annie's optimism and bravery may ultimately lead her on a path to discovering a new family...and a brighter future.

Who Is Whoopi Goldberg?

Whoopi Goldberg is a legendary entertainer whose career spans over four decades, encompassing film, television, theatre, and comedy. She's one of the few artists to have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award, making her part of the exclusive "EGOT" club. Known for her roles in films like The Color Purple and Ghost, as well as her long-running stint as co-host on The View, Goldberg is also no stranger to the stage. Her return to Broadway as Miss Hannigan in Annie is just another chapter to add to the book of her fabulous career!

Annie, a Tony Award-winning adaptation of Harold Gray's comic strip, features a score by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin, and a book by Thomas Meehan. Fans can look forward to a heartwarming and nostalgic experience this Christmas season, with full casting details to be revealed soon.
