The Reimagined Story Took Home Four Awards
First immortalized in S.E. Hinton's novel and later in Francis Ford Coppola's film, The Outsiders has found a new life on Broadway. The musical adaptation takes place in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1967 during a time of social upheaval and stark class divisions. It follows Ponyboy Curtis and his best friend Johnny Cade navigating adolescence, belonging, and identity. In a more than impressive feat, the musical swept the 2024 Tony Awards, securing four wins including Best Musical. Now that's how it's done!
About The Outsiders
A story resonating with generations is now reimagined with a fresh, thrilling voice and a heartfelt portrayal of the Greasers and their struggles against their affluent rivals, the Socs. First nominated for an astounding twelve Tony Awards, The Outsiders musical features a book by Adam Rapp and Justin Levine, with music and lyrics by Jamestown Revival (Jonathan Clay & Zach Chance) and Levine himself. The production has received acclaim from major critics, such as Entertainment Weekly and New York Magazine, for its staging, music, and choreography.
Triumph at the Tonys
At the annual 2024 Tony Awards, The Outsiders garnered accolades in four major categories. Hinton's story and the innovative reimagining by the Broadway team won The Outsiders the Best Musical award, whilst Danya Taymor's visionary direction earned her the Tony for Best Direction of a Musical, meanwhile, Cody Spencer's masterful sound design won him the Tony for Best Sound Design and the duo of Brian MacDevitt and Hana S. Kim clinched the Tony for Best Lighting Design.
