Bad Cinderella Closing on Broadway!

Cinderella will take her final bow on Broadway

Andrew Lloyd Webber's Bad Cinderella will be closing on Broadway June 4. The modern retelling of the classic fairytale has been based at the Imperial Theatre since February, but following a decline in box office sales it's time to say goodbye.

Following its rocky stint and controversial ending on the West End , there was hope that Bad Cinderella would be more at home on Broadway. It had every ingredient a musical needed; idyllic scenery, ravishing costumes and music by the man himself - Andrew Lloyd Webber. So where did it go wrong? On paper, it should become a long runner and be Webber's next Phantom (gone but never forgotten) but we find ourselves saying goodbye to yet another Broadway production before its even had chance to settle. Maybe the musical bar has been set to a new level; with competition like Hamilton holding the title of Broadway royalty.

Following its planned closing date, Bad Cinderella, which officially opened on 23 March, will have played 33 previews and 85 performances. Was Lloyd Webber cursed from the moment he called it 'Bad' Cinderella? Or did everyone have a bitter taste in their mouths following the West End closure? We guess the musical not receiving any Tony Award nominations was the real nail in the pumpkin carriage.

So, it's goodbye to Bad Cinderella - and ultimately, goodbye to Andrew Lloyd Webber who now doesn't have a single production on Broadway.

WHAT IS BAD CINDERELLA ABOUT?

Welcome to the picturesque town of Bellville, where the streets, and the citizens, are all gorgeous folk, each living a fairytale existence. Well not all of them. Resolutely rebelling against Bellville's picture-perfect persona is the town's brash outcast; Cinderella. This tough girl wants out of Bellville, especially now her only friend, Prince Sebastian is more into his Heir to the Throne Duties than their friendship. But as they grow apart, a new spark seems to keep them together...Add to that the Queen has ordered a Royal Wedding to keep the peasants happy, and it looks like the steadfastly unique loudmouth is going to have to do something she never dreamed of - conform. With the help of The Godmother, can Cinders find true love and more importantly, true happiness in her own skin?
