Santino Fontana, star of the new musical Tootsie, has taken Broadway by storm and has won Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical at the 2019 Tony Awards! Tootsie also won Best Book of a Musical for writer Robert Horn.
Tootsie wowed critics when it opened on April 23rd as it gives the classic '80s movie a 21st Century revamp! Tootsie was nominated for eleven awards and is directed by Scott Ellis and features music and lyrics by David Yazbek. Tootsie is choreographed by Denis Jones.
Santino Fontana stars as leading character Michael Dorsey/Dorothy Michaels with Lilli Cooper as Julie Nichols, Sandy Stiles as Sandy Lester, John Behlmann as Max Van Horn, Andy Grotelueschen as Jeff Slater, Julie Halston as Rita Marshall, Michael McGrath as Stan Fields and Reg Rogers as Ron Carlisle.
What is Tootsie about?
When obsessive perfectionist Michael is fired from a Broadway gig due to his proclivities, he decides that change is necessary - even if it means his gender. Taking to drag to pass himself off as the glamorous 'Dorothy', he soon lands a new job. But watch out Broadway, makeup and clothes are no match for this ego!
