Hadestown Leads The Tonys With 8 Awards!

Now playing at the Walter Kerr Theater.

Anais Mitchell's new folk-opera has been making waves on Broadway, now cemented with eight Tony Awards! The musical, which is directed by Rachel Chavkin, was the biggest winner of the night and took home the coveted Best Musical award.

Hadestown was also awarded Best Original Score for Anais Mitchell, Best Direction of a Musical for Rachel Chavkin and Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical for Andre De Sheilds.

The new musical also took home awards for Best Lighting Design of a Musical, Best Sound Design of a Musical and Best Scenic Design of a Musical!

Hadestown officially opened on Broadway on April 17 and stars Eva Noblezada as Eurydice, Andre De Shields as Hermes, Reeve Carney as Orpheus, Amber Gray as Persephone and Patrick Page as Hades.

What is Hadestown about?

This new musical transports the action from ancient Greece to an eclectic setting akin to the buzzing New Orleans scene. Hadestown weaves together the opposing forces of nature and industry, faith and doubt, and love and death to tell the story of the guitar-toting Orpheus and his great love Eurydice as they battle the harsh landscape of Hadestown, an industrial underworld of trouble and toil that makes for a better choice than the winter-ravaged landscape above. Lured by the promise of food and shelter, Eurydice is kidnapped by Hades, a foreman-like figure who rules the mechanicals below. Orpheus sets out to save his wife, setting off a chain reaction of unrest, riot, and chaos in his fateful wake.

Hadestown is now playing at the Walter Kerr Theater.
