Tony's Series: Tony Nominees Steeped in History!

To Kill A Mockingbird and The Ferryman show what life was like in the past...

Art often imitates life, especially on Broadway! To Kill A Mockingbird and The Ferryman (two of the most nominated plays this season) both dive into the past to give us the glimpse of what life used to be like for our ancestors!

2019 has seen Broadway dominated with amazing plays and To Kill A Mockingbird and The Ferryman are no exception! With nine Tony nominations each, these two productions present two challenging eras in history. Whilst To Kill A Mockingbird (adapted by Harper Lee's era-defining novel) focuses on the dreadful inequality of 1930s America, The Ferryman takes us to 1980s Ireland where the Catholics and Protestants are embroiled in religious warfare.

Although the characters in these stories are fictional, the themes ring true and do an important job of highlighting how far society has come, and the heroes who fought to bring peace.

Witness history for yourself with tickets to these two Broadway hits!

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD Directed by Bartlett Sher and adapted by Aaron Sorkin

A portrait of simmering racial tension in a small southern town, To Kill a Mockingbird is considered one of the greatest American novels ever written. In today's current climate, its themes of prejudice and inequality seem just as prescient, while the book's steadfast lawyer Atticus Finch remains the gold-standard for noble heroes.

Told through the eyes of 13-year-old Scout, Mockingbird is set in the pre-civil rights era Deep South of the 1930s. When local black man Tom Robinson is accused of raping a white girl, Scout's lawyer father Atticus Finch takes on the case, determined to try and give Tom a fair trial. With his decision to defend Tom, Atticus finds himself ostracised from the community, and the lives of his family put into danger. As the trial approaches, Atticus must choose whether to buckle under the mounting pressure or to stand his ground and fight for what is right. BOOK TICKETS

THE FERRYMAN Written by Jez Butterworth and directed by Sam Mendes

Set in the 1980s The Ferryman takes place during one of Ireland's most torrid periods of history. Titled the 'Troubles' the conflict spanned over 20 years and saw Unionists (those who wanted Northen Ireland to remain in the United Kingdom) and Nationalists (who wanted Northern Ireland to rejoin the Republic of Ireland) fight in one of the most violent and bloody eras in history.

The Ferryman centers on the Carney family, who as a farming family in rural Country Derry believe that they are far from the conflict, however, their peaceful idyll is shattered with the arrival of a visitor. Bringing troubling news of a prison hunger strike in which 10 republican prisoners starved themselves to death, the large family are faced with a choice; to take up the sword in aid of the prisoners or work the fields for the family.
