Rodgers and Hart's metaphysical comedy
Every year, the New York City Center show some love to some underappreciated musical gems with Encores!, a series of three strictly-limited revivals of Broadway shows that deserve a reappraisal.
Oklahoma! may have revolutionised the musical in 1943, but the preceding decade saw a number of show experimenting with the form. Rodgers and Hart's I Married an Angel is one such example, bringing together a comedy of manners and extended dance sequencers choreographed by the New York City Ballet great George Balanchine (he of The Nutcracker fame). The story sees a heavenly creature descend from the heavens to teach a cold-hearted banker the error of his way.
