Raw, Emotional and Outrageously Funny
Move over Sex In The City, Girls and Broad City, there's a new girl gang taking over the streets of the Big Apple and they're raw, real and exceptionally funny. A breakout success for playwright and poet Aziza Barnes, BLKS debuted at Chicago's Steppenwolf Theater in 2018, earning rave reviews for its unflinching portrayal of the physical and emotional feelings of Black, genderqueer women over the course of 24 hours in New York City.
Funny as it is a poignant celebration of the feminine bond, Barnes' rapid-fire dialogue and sharp humour punctuates the story of three twenty-something African American women - Octavia, June and Imani. Their love lives may be complicated but when the going gets tough they pull through together, laughing and crying through it all as they search for meaning, intimacy and a way to be heard through the noise of modern life.
