Based on Oscar Wilde's famously passionate play, Richard Strauss' operatic adaptation is a creative masterpiece that continues to linger in your mind. Don't miss this exciting new version from the Metropolitan Opera from Claus Guth, moving the action from ancient times to the Victorian era.
Premiering in 1905 in Germany, Salome won Strauss great acclaim and has since become a powerfully popular piece. Religion collides with eroticism and perversion, confronting human nature almost uncomfortably and always exquisitely, including the infamous Dance of the Seven Veils.
What is the story?
Deep below the banqueting hall of King Herod lies the prophet Jochanaan, imprisoned and heard only in echoes rumbling around the palace. The young priestess Salome finds her self attracted to the voice and ignores Herod's orders to seek the source. In her thrall is the enchanted Narrboth, who will do anything for her, even if the consequences result in death...
