A frivilous, musical delight from 1928, set in the wild west

Why See Whoopee?

Musicals Tonight! is a theater company specialising in reviving musicals that have been largely lost to the mists of time. Part of their 2014/2015 season at The Lion Theatre is Whoopee, a 1928 musical from a book by Oscar winning director William Anthony Maguire. Set in the Old West, and following the misadventures of Sheriff Bob Wells and his bride-to-be Sally Morgan, the musical itself may not be too familiar but some of its songs certainly are. The score, with music by Walter Donaldson and lyrics by Gus Kahn (the pair who would later pen the classic My Baby Just Cares For Me) includes Love Me or Leave Me and Makin' Whoopee. Later made into a popular 1930 movie with Eddie Cantor, Whoopee is a shamefully neglected delight, that deserves its chance to entertain a new generation.
