The Secret Life of Bees

The Secret Life of Bees at Linda Gross Theater

Why see The Secret Life of Bees?

The World Premiere of The Secret Life Of Bees Musical

Based on the best-selling novel by Sue Monk Kidd, The Secret Life of Bees is set to take its Off Broadway bow as part of the Atlantic Theater Company's brand new 2018/19 season. Helmed by Sam Gold, the Tony-winning director behind Broadway smash hit Fun Home, the beloved coming of age story gets the musical treatment with a stunning new score by Grammy and Tony Award-winning composer Duncan Sheik and book by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage.

Set in South Carolina in the 60s, the story follows 14 year old Lily Owens. On the cusp of womanhood, Lily is haunted by her mother's death and abused by her tyrannical father. Her one solace is found in Rosaleen, her black caregiver, who rebells against the social injustice of the day when she asserts her right to vote. Inspired by Rosaleen's bravery, she escapes with her caregiver to the town that holds the key to her mother's mysterious past. Taken in by a trio of bee-keepers called the Boatwright sisters, the pair find solace, spiritual healing and long awaited answers.

I loved this show

The creative team and the cast brought me into their 1960's South Carolina world - of the bee-keeping sisters, and of Lily, Rosaleen and Zach - with humor, with fear, with joy and with pain. I've rarely felt so involved in a story - my senses were heightened throughout the show. It is thrilling theater. Highly recommend for anyone. I am a fan of both Duncan Sheik and Susan Birkenhead and their music and lyrics fit beautifully. Lynn Nottage is a great playwright and Sam Gold's direction is spot on. LaChanze, Eisa Davis, Saycon Sengbloh and Elizabeth Teeter are standouts in a terrific cast. ... Read more
