Thomas Ostermeier's unflinching portrayal of the amoral monarch
After stunning at the Edinburgh Internation Fringe last year, provocateur Thomas Ostermeier brings his visceral reimagining of the amoral monarch to New York for its US premiere. A flurry of pulsating drumming, glittering pop-culture references, violence and darkly comic moments, the production stars cult Shakesperean auteur Lars Eidinger as the deformed Richard, hobbling across the stage like a rock star dictator as he destroys every obstacle in his path to the throne.
The crippled yet ruthlessly ambitious Richard is a wicked man, full of mischief, murder and betrayal, as he works his way up the ladder of royal power. The steady stream of murder and lust for power lead to an epic confrontation on the battlefield at Bosworth, where his incredible hubris finally leaves him cold.
