A Rousing Trio Of Balanchine's Finest Works
The New York City Ballet returns to the source in the All Balanchine III program. Spanning three centuries, the trio of founding choreographer George Balanchine's works begins with Concerto Barocco, a seamless marriage of the balletmaster's breathtaking dance and the baroque music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Each of the ballet's lead dancers mirror an instrument of the virtuosic violin concerto to stunning effect.
This is followed by Kammermusik No. 2, a technically demanding ballet that requires great speed and focused attention from its participants, set to the neo-classical music of German composer Paul Hindemith. Things come to a spirited close with Vienna Waltzes, a truly epic work that combines the music of Johann Strauss II, Franz Lehar and Richard Strauss. Evoking the grand ballrooms of Vienna at the turn of the century, its final movements are a thrilling conclusion to an evening of world class ballet.
