Considering its namesake was one of the most influential band leaders of the big band swing era (and a Red Bank native to boot), it's a no brainer that the historic Count Basie Theatre would open its doors for their second annual Basie Summer Jazz Fest. Spread over two glorious days, this years headliners for Day 1 include Michael Franks, Lee Ritenour & Dave Grusin, the Bob James Trio and Lizz Wright.
A forerunner of the Quiet Storm Movement, a form of jazz, pop and R&B fusion music characterised by slowed down tempos, nuanced dynamics and chilled out rhythms, Michael Frank's influence has spread across a range of genres. He's played with the likes of Art Garfunkel, David Sanborn and Patti Austin, as well as recorded with Kurt Elling, Diana Krall and Shirley Bassey amongst others.
