A Brand New US Off-Broadway Premiere
There are writers in literary history who not only leave their mark through their extraordinary story-telling but also through their extraordinary lives. Karen Blixen was one such figure. Writing under the pen name Isak Dinesen, the Danish author wrote Out Of Africa, an account of her spiritual journey in Kenya, as well as Babbette's Feast, both of which have been adapted into Academy Award-winning feature films.
For the first time in the US, Blixen's life story will captivate audiences anew in The Baroness - Isak Dinesen's Final Affair, a play by renowned Danish playwright Thor Bjorn Krebs brought to the stage by the Scandinavian American Theater Company. At a time when different people are increasingly considered outcasts, Blixen is the perfect embodiment of the company's credo, to present thought-provoking and unusual plays that bridge the gap between cultures.
What is The Baroness About?
Ever the non-conformist, Blixen embarked on her final affair at the age of 62 with 29 year old poet Thorkild Bjornvig. Introduced by the beautiful young wife of Blixen's publisher, the trio became embroiled in a passionate love triangle filled with poetry, lust, humour and art. The play is an interpretation of the letters, anecdotes and biographies of Blixen and Bjornvig, ultimately questioning the nature of art and artists.
