Exploring The Great Migration Through Its Music
The historic Carnegie Hall continues its 'Migrations: The Making Of America' series with Two Wings, Jason Moran and Alicia Hall Moran's compelling new examination of The Great Migration. The duo's shifting tableux capture the spirit of great social upheaval and change that the emancipation of slaves had on America's cultural landscape, carried in their rich musical heritage from the South to the North and far beyond.
Drawing upon records and interviews, the husband and wife creative team fuse the stories of those who experienced the relocation of more than 6 million African Americans with their own family oral history, using the medium of R&B, gospel, classical, work songs, rock 'n' roll and even Broadway music, as well as spoken word and visual media. They'll be joined by Grammy winner Smokie Norful and the Grammy-winning Imani Winds quintet for an insightful, emotional and uplifting evening remembering those who came before us and shaped the world we live in today.
