The Beacon Theater, originally opened in 1929 as a movie theater, was designed by Chicago architect Walter W. Ahlschlager. The theater has a seating capacity of 2,894 and has three tiers. During the 1970s, the venue started to host concerts and other music events, and is now one of the leading music and entertainment venues in New York, managed by the Madison Square Garden Company. The 2011 and 2012 Tony Awards, which were broadcast on CBS-TV, were hosted at the Beacon Theater. In 1982, it joined the National Register of Historic Places, and in November 2006 the theatre was added to MSG Entertainment's family of world-class venues.
