A Powerful Celebration Of Black Pride Music
Marking five decades since James Brown's soaring funk anthem became a musical banner for the Black Power Movement, the Apollo Theater continues its groundbreaking examination of arts and culture through the lens of the African American experience with a special one-night-only concert staging of 'Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud at 50'.
Featuring musical direction by Grammy-winning bassist, composer and MD Christian McBride, as well as civil rights movement activist and icon Reverend Al Sharpton on hosting duties, the event not only weaves together the songs of James Brown, but a collection of musical responses to the racial tensions reaching their peak after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr in 1968. Together with an all-star backing band, McBride and Sharpton will pay homage to the likes of The Temptations, and Sly and The Family Stone amongst others in their powerful celebration of the songs that shaped black pride and black history.
