'Bernhardt/Hamlet,' directed with wit and verve by Moritz von Stuelpnagel, is a deep-inside love letter to the theater as a kind of laboratory in which experiments in both art and equality are possible

Why See Bernhardt/Hamlet?

A fascinating glimpse into the life of an acting legend

Roundabout Theatre presents this brand new world premiere from Therese Rebeck (What We're Up Against, NBC's Smash,) concerning the career-defining performance of iconoclastic leading lady Sarah Bernhardt as Shakespeare's Danish Prince in 1899.
Starring Tony, Golden Globe and Olivier winner Janet McTeer and directed by Mortiz von Steuelpnagel, Bernhardt/Hamlet will focus on the preparation of Bernhardt and company as they set about creating a production for the ages.

One of the most respected actresses of the 19th Century, Bernhardt received great notices for her part, with critics labelling her performance as 'youthful, energetic and volatile', a marked difference from the usual melancholy given to Hamlet at the time. Instantly successful, the production and Bernhardt went on to tour Europe before arriving here.

Did you know?

For the famous graveyard scene, Sarah Bernhardt used a real human skull as 'Yorick' - a gift from none other than Les Miserables and Hunchback of Notredame writer - Victor Hugo.
