What Did The Critics Think Of Cyrano?

Scarlet, November 11th, 2019

Now showing at the Daryl Roth Theater until December 22, 2019

Scene-stealing Emmy winner Peter Dinklage returns to the stage to star as the titular Cyrano De Bergerac once more, but what did the critics think?

The New York Times praised Peter Dinklage in saying "The man who won four Emmy Awards playing Tyrion, I hasten to announce, is by no means a disappointment as the witty, wily and dangerously underestimated title character of 'Cyrano'" but also went on to point out "The entire show feels woefully static, with performers (dresses in ahistorical costumes by Tom Broecker) lined up across the narrow stage like participants in a high-school pageant."

TimeOut was also applauding Dinklage's performance, more than the production itself. Saying "It's hard to fall in love with this confounding production...Yet Dinklage makes you care." Following on with "you feel his elation give way to despair. It pierces your heart as the rest of the production rarely manages to do".

The ovation for Dinklage continues, with Vulture saying "Dinklage is the right man for the job...Rueful and comic when he needs to be; he's a swashbuckling soul in pain for the rest." Rounding the review off with, "So although the whole becomes repetitive, you'll find much delight in at Cyrano."
