The Reviews For Stereophonic Are Here!

David Adjimi's Heartfelt Rock and Roll Musical Gets Exceptional Reviews All Round

Written by David Adjmi, with songs by Will Butler of Arcade Fire, this heavily buzzed production takes you on a wild ride through the day-to-day of five rock musicians making an album premiered on Broadway last week at the John Golden Theatre. Following a triumphant sold-out stint at Playwrights Horizons in 2023, where it garnered critical acclaim, there has been mass anticipation for its Broadway debut from critics and theatre-goers alike.

The story itself is one of infighting, frustration, romance, and rock'n'roll (all the things you'd expect from a disagreeing 70's band). David Adjmi notes he drew inspiration from the iconic band Fleetwood Mac and came up with the idea while listening to Led Zepplin and pondering "What would it have been like to be in the studio when this was being recorded?". Well, the reviews are in, and they are gleaming!

The New York Times: "A fly-on-the-wall study of how people both need and viciously destroy each other, "Stereophonic" is a fiery family drama, as electrifying as any since "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"

Broadway News: "Sometimes, a song is so good you want to live in it. You want to nestle into its melodies, unravel the chords holding it up and more than anything, wander in the mind fields of the people who created it. David Adjmi's "Stereophonic" is the play that sparks this very desire."

Vulture: "But it's the thing Adjmi conjures up at the end of Act One that makes Stereophonic such a meaningful and exceptional piece of work: In its bones, it's a love song, bittersweet and wounded and ferociously loyal, to the act of making art specifically, art that requires that most exhausting, infuriating, transcendent element: collaboration."

Variety: "Audiences may feel the same way after seeing this work of theatrical virtuosity, realizing that all the tiny details, wild rhythms, and clever hooks presented on stage have added up to a work that is brave, purposeful, and rich."

The Hollywood Reporter: "Arguably the best new American drama since Annie Baker's The Flick, David Adjmi's Stereophonic shares both a hyper-naturalistic style and a sprawling three-hour running time with that 2013 masterwork"

Deadline: "With unerring direction by Daniel Aukin and performed by a miraculous cast that so fully embodies Fleetwoo- I mean, the unnamed band at the heart of Stereophonic, the play is like the answer to a question you never knew you needed answered."

Theatermania: "In short, Stereophonic is still as much of a masterpiece as it was six months ago, and it's deservedly poised to become the big hit of the year."
