Kiss Me Kate Wows The Critics!

Now playing at Studio 54.

Cole Porter's classic musical has returned to Broadway after almost 20 years. Produced by Roundabout Theatre and starring Kelli O'Hara, James T. Lane and Corbin Bleu, what did the critics think of the updated revival?

The Washington Post was full of praise for the production calling it "A new first-class Broadway version that at times raises its sparkle quotient to incandescence". They continued with "Director Scott Ellis and choreographer Warren Carlyle apply so much sizzling flair to their revival of the 1948 show that it has restored my faith in efforts to mount golden-age musicals with books that have, well, seen better days."

The Observer mirrored the praise saying "This version softens the lady-bashing while not sacrificing the sexiness and humor. Above all, it's acted and staged with consummate style and grace". The New York Times said "The author's take on marriage is more complex and insightful than we may recall. And where they did wander into material now rightly seen as toxic, a few changes and one major revision all us yo enjoy it in a new light".

The New York Post praised star of the show Kelli O'Hara saying, "Whether she's hitting high notes or swatting her male co-star, Kelli O'Hara - funny and fierce - is reason enough to see 'Kiss Me Kate'". Deadline also praised the performances saying, "Kelli O'Hara and Will Chase are so evenly matched - in performance, talent and temperament - that it's hard to imagine a more finely balanced battle de deux."

What is Kiss Me Kate about?

Fred Graham, an egotistical leading man, a director and producer is reunited with his ex-wife, Lilli Venassi, when they are both pitted to play opposite each other in a new production of Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew.

As rehearsals and the production progress, the battle of sexes continues both on and off stage. Even though this couple claim to hate each other it becomes clear that perhaps they don't hate each other as much as they think they do, after all the line between hate and love is very close...

Alongside the bickering liaison of the two leads, Lois Lane the show's supporting actress is trying to support her gambling boyfriend, Bill and his attempts to avoid the clutches of the local gangsters.

Kiss Me Kate is now playing at Studio 54 through to June 2.
