Enjoying a double world premiere at San Diego's La Jolla Playhouse and Princeton's McCarter Theatre in 2021, effervescent dance-centric production Bhangin' It closes out the McCarter's 2020/21 season programming with a whirlwind of feelgood bhangra and vibrant theatrical color. Written by husband and wife duo Mike Lew (Tiger Style!) and Rehana Lew Mirza (Soldier X) in collaboration with composer/lyricist Sam Willmott, the light-hearted romp also features percussion and arrangement by Grammy nominee Deep Singh.
Traditional Indian dance meets a good old fashioned American competition in Bhangin' It's delightful storyline. Mary is a biracial student with a love of bhangra dance, and excels in the artform. But her teammate Preeti deems her 'not Indian enough' and she is unfairly made to leave the team. Not one to give up easily, Mary forms her own motley crew where the only criteria for joining the team is a love for dance. With Nationals looming, Mary and her ragtag bunch attempt to get into shape and pose as serious competitors.
