The Scarlet Letter

The Scarlet Letter at Berlind Theater

Why see The Scarlet Letter?

Nathaniel Hawthorne's Visceral Story Revived

New Jersey's McCarter Theatre continues its groundbreaking 2020/21 season programming with a brand new work fresh from a critically lauded Off-Broadway run at the Lucille Lortel Theatre. Adapted by renowned actress and playwright Kate Hamill, whose contemporary adaptations of classic novels have won her much critical acclaim, The Scarlett Letter breathes new life into Nathaniel Hawthorne's celebrated story.

An explosive collision of passion, wild emotion, and forbidden love, The Scarlet Letter explores femininity and women's sexuality through the lens of mid 17th century Boston. It follows the trials and tribulations of one Hester Prynne. A young woman who believes herself a widow, Hester has a child out of wedlock, and her world is sent into a tailspin when her husband Roger Chillingworth returns to her very much alive.
