DOUBTS BE DAMNED

Ben Platt puts on a gorgeous performance in a gorgeous theater, prompting me to attend the show twice. Though he can seem awkward or anxious when speaking to the audience, his vocals shine through in a selection of consistent near-perfect performances of original work and covers--not a bad note was hit either night. Even those who are unfamiliar with his work leave appreciators of his talent. The crowd was on their feet on multiple occasions--covers of Maybe This Time and Somewhere Over The Rainbow serving as both a nod to the icons of Palace Theater past and a response to why he deserves a spot on that stage. Rather than asking why Platt is the one to open up the Palace with a three-week residency, it is important to consider who COULD perfectly sell out 30,000 seats across shows on their own right now? Very few names--Broadway or not--could. Maybe a residency was not the best way to reopen the Palace, perhaps it could have been a shorter run, but Platt effortlessly swings the bat.

GLORIFIED ALBUM-RELEASE PARTY

Three weeks of a yet-to-achieve-actual-stardom performer is an odd way to open the gloriously renovated Palace. Ben Platt sang his little heart out, but it all seemed like a sham, an actor pretending to be a superstar when he's actually a (not untalented) Broadway middleweight. He plugs his new album eight or was it twenty times? Really? The only true star power was provided by guest Kristin Chenoweth, who brought down the house.
