Celebrating the transition from Music Director Designate to fully fledged 26th Music Director of the New York Philharmonic in its 2018/19 season, world renowned Dutch conductor Jaap Van Zweden leads a program of astonishing beauty. The evening begins with the world premiere of Conrad Tao's new, as yet unnamed work. The former piano prodigy presents a cinematic aural experience that calls to mind the musicals of old - the perfect prelude to Bruckner's sweeping Eighth Symphony.
Following the resounding success of his Seventh Symphony, Bruckner was inspired to create the most ambitious work of his career. A sonic triumph, the Romantic era icon surpassed his ambitions and wrote a rafter-clearing symphony rich with powerful melodies and truly epic in scale. Its lush brass arrangements and rumbling timpani rolls climax in a soul-stirring blaze of glory that has become one of the great moments of the Western Classical tradition and is not to be missed!
