The good news for Phans is that the response was very positive!

In 'Masquerade.' You're There Inside the Phantom's Mind. Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Phantom of the Opera" returns to New York in an immersive spectacle, as silly as it is thrilling. - New York Times

The very notion of this reimaginingcreated by Lloyd Webber and director Diane Paulus, from a concept by Randy Weiner-is surprising; perhaps even more surprising is that, somehow, they pull it off... But if you have any affection for Phantom at all, it's a blast. The main attraction of Masquerade is not its stars, its story or its music of the night; it's the pleasure of re-exploring a property you already know and seeing it from deluxe new angles. Get dressed up, hide your face and give yourself over to the phantasy. - Time Out

An immersive, experiential reworking of Andrew Lloyd Webber's long-running musical turns it into something resembling a mostly fun theme park ride - The Guardian

Performed by a 28-person ensemble to groups of sixty people at a time, this reimagining delivers the highlights of the show via a series of intimate scenes, with plenty of running around in between. It also offers intriguing variations, including more of the Phantom's backstory, a song cut from the ill-fated film version, several new scenes, and, since it runs a mere two hours sans intermission, some judicious cutting. The result sort of resembles Frankenstein's monster, but it works exceedingly well. - New York Stage Review

Masquerade is inexhaustibly cool. Anyone with even a passing affection for Lloyd Webber's stage musical will be awed by watching from the shore as the Phantom's boat sails across his underground lake during the title song or in standing just outside the crash zone for the chandelier's famous fall. Across its reimagining of The Phantom of Opera, Masquerade offers a refreshingly vibrant music of the night. - Slant Magazine
