Three Reasons Why The Phantom Of The Opera Really Is That Good

Author News DeskNews Desk, January 25th, 2019

The iconic musical celebrates 31 years on Broadway on January 26.

Happy Phantom of the Opera day! Yes, that's right, Andrew Lloyd Webber's iconic musical officially celebrates its 31st birthday on Broadway today (January 26). With their 13,000th performance coming in April (what!) we take a look at why this musical is so popular.

The Music

It may seem obvious when we say that The Phantom of the Opera's score is one of the best on Broadway, but it's the truth. Grand, full of opulent melodies and not forgetting Christine's range, Phantom's score draws you into the mystical and plush world of the Paris Opera and its spooky inhabitant. With 'Angel of Music', 'The Music of the Night' and 'Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again' Webber's never-ceasing talent is on full display, making you awash with goose-bumps, and leaving you singing (or at least trying to) all the way home.

The Production

To accompany the mega-score designer Maria Bjornson couldn't have just left the actors on a bare stage. Don't worry, she didn't. One huge chandelier later The Phantom of the Opera is a feast for the eyes. Full of glittering costumes, boats that actually sail and a throbbing backdrop of colour and gold you definitely get your money's worth at every Phantom performance. A perfect companion to the intricate music the whole production of The Phantom of the Opera is to be marvelled at.

When young Christine Daae catches the eye (or ear) of the Paris Opera's ever troubled Phantom, an earnest and perilous fight for her affections ensue. Will Christine be able to flee from the clutches of the Phantom and return to her true love, Raoul?
