Remembering a Theatre Titan

A look back on the life and legacy of theatre composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim

On 26 November 2021, the theatre world mourned the loss of one of its most influential creative titans. Stephen Sondheim created some of the industries most beloved works, including West Side StorySunday In The Park With George, Sweeney Todd, Company, and Into The Woods. Works which are renown as much for their compelling lyrics as for their beautiful scores, and which have been produced by theatre companies around the globe.

Born Stephen Joshua Sondheim in 1930, Sondheim was a true New Yorker, born into a Jewish family and having grown up on the Upper East Side. His musical talents were nurtured from a young age not by his family but by Oscar Hammerstein II, whose son Sondheim was friends with.

This friendship would become instrumental throughout Sondheim's theatre career, with Hammerstein introducing him to Hal Prince. Prince and Sondheim went on to create many now iconic Broadway shows together, including Company, Follies, Sweeney Todd, and Merrily We Roll Along.

Although he went on to create 19 major theatre shows and win eight Tony Awards, he is perhaps best known for the sensitivity with which he handled the darker aspects of the human experience and how beautifully he brought this to life on stage. The most recent stage and screen revivals of productions like West Side Story and Company speak to this. Furthermore, they are a testament to how his art continues to speak to new audiences long after they were originally created - and will continue to do for so long after his death.

"Bit by bit, putting it together...
Piece by piece, only way to make a work of art.
Every moment makes a contribution,
Every little detail plays a part.
Having just the vision's no solution,
Everything depends on execution,
Putting it together, that's what counts."
