World Premiere
A timely examination of American education's inextricable links to wealth, Dan Cody's Yacht receives its world premiere at the Manhattan Theatre Club this Spring. Written by Anthony Giardina (The City of Conversation), this play was inspired by a section in The Great Gatsby, in which a copper mogul takes the young Gatsby under his wing. Dan Cody's Yacht focuses on a struggling school teacher in Boston, and a proposition made to her by the wealthy father of one her pupils.
Commissioned by MTC, it's a showcase for playwright and novelist Giardiner's knack for getting under his characters' skin. Doug Hughes directs.
What is Dan Cody's Yacht About?
While she works at an affluent school, a young schoolteacher's own child is enrolled in a poorly funded one. One day, the wealthy father of one of her students offers to pay her considerable sums of money - enough to move to a more upmarket school district - if she'll become his financial adviser. However, the proposition isn't as straightforward as it seems, and the schoolteacher must consider all of the startling ramifications that come with accepting it.
