What a wonderful afternoon of opera. The artistic design of the production was first-rate, although I did worry about the safety of the leads as they pushed and shoved and fell a few times. The dancing that introduced the "two" acts was a great addition. I'm going back!

Carmen was a disapointing character last night. She was anything but charming. The whole mise en cene was poor. The colours, faded, as the whole opera. I do not recommend it.

AN UTTER DISAPPOINTMENT
I couldn’t believe I was at the Metropolitan Opera House: this production felt amateur-ish. Clementine Margaine wasn’t the least bit convincing as the sultry seductress Carmen. There was no rapport between Carmen and Don José, the whole thing felt flat—the singing, the set (boring and didn’t evoke Spain), the costumes (boring grays, beiges, and black: for gypsies, really?). Even the “flamenco” number wasn’t thrilling. And why set it during the Spanish Civil War? It added nothing and didn’t end up looking all that different from a standard 19th century setting.

Given that plays, operas, films etc are more explicit than in the past, this effort seemed specially designed to attract non-opera goers. Sexy without being exciting, Carmen was anything but the victim she is meant to be. At times the stage was crowded with people doing very little, along with children who really weren't needed. Not much was made of the toreador and his famous piece, and although Micaela (sic) and her real-life husband did their best the whole production was something of a disappointment.
