BLOW-AWAY FABULOUS

Groban is fantastic really leaning into his baritone and Ashford is a wonderful comic relief. Their timing is tight, the staging was great and the audience was charged for a great show. Nobody went home disappointed. Welcome to the next Broadway smash!

DELIGHTFULLY DREADFUL

Traveled to see Josh Groban live his dream of starring in Sweeney Todd. He delivered Big Time. His voice was never better. Annaleigh Ashford was spot on as Mrs. Lovett. The staging was brilliant. But what was equally remarkable was the physicality of the presentation. The cast was all-in all the time, each of them giving the best they could throughout the performance. Top drawer all the way. Congrats to Groban for showing up since age 17 to work toward his dream and making it happen. He's earned his stardom.

MISSING THE HORROR ...

Wonderful performances, lighting, costumes, choreography. I felt the set was too sparse, and although Mr. Groban sings the **** out of this role, he is not horrific by any means. The audience was laughing as he was murdering his clientele. Laughing. I suppose this is partly due to Annaleigh's Mrs. Lovett, which was stretched to the rafters in comedic overtones. She was so funny that some of the audience was giggling during 'Not While I'm Around' which was disappointing but hard to pass blame on. I enjoyed this production, but yearned for the 'horrific' experience of Landsbury/Cariou (my first Sweeney) and the more recent production at the Barrow Street Theater, which was absolutely intense! I suppose this production, with it's dialed down horror, will appear to a wider audience and that is good for Broadway. The orchestra is wonderful. Oh and Gaten Matarazzo was the surprise of the show! He was outstanding!

NICE STAGING

I liked the staging, itself, although there a few blocking issues for the first few rows of audience members. Although Groban has the vocal chops for the role,, however, I didn't find his performance compelling. He seems to lack range as an actor and certainly didn't often convey the depth of this character, just a bit of bewilderedness and sadness. That can't be sad for the other actors, who were stupenduous.

HIGH MUSICAL/THEATER COMMUNITY OPENS ON BROADWAY

Josh Groban has a phenomenal voice. His voice is his forte; not his acting. His Sweeney Todd is about as frightening as a miniature poodle. Excuse me, miniature poodles can be frightening. Sweeney should have murder in his eyes and one should be terrified of him. This Sweeney doesn’t go there; ever. Alexa did Stephen Sanheim write Sweeney Todd. I guess the name attached to the music made him want to do this role. The sets are fine the costumes beautiful, and the choreography? Oh, well. Seriously, if I wanted to see a high school musical or community theater, I’d like to pay those prices. I would not be surprised if the Hallmark channel was an investor in this musical. The visuals and the singing, and the sets as I said are lovely, but the musical gets robbed because it doesn’t have the lead actor it should.
